SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

University of Colorado JILA Addition
Boulder, CO

This project is a 54,000-square-foot addition to the existing JILA (Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics) laboratory building in the heart of the University of Colorado’s Boulder campus, one of the leading physical science institutes in the United States. The six-story addition will be made up of two mechanical rooms as well as state-of-the-art laboratory, technical, office and collaborative spaces. The lab area contains class 100, 1,000 and 10,000 clean rooms.

The HVAC systems include five air handlers and a make-up air unit that total 95,000 CFM. Steam from the campus utilities will be utilized for heating requirements on both the HVAC and plumbing systems. Likewise, chilled water from the campus utilities will be used for HVAC cooling.

In addition to the normal HVAC and plumbing systems, we will also generate and provide a process cooling water system, laboratory gas systems, ultra-pure water system, and reverse osmosis water system. There will be laboratory exhaust systems requiring both Teflon-coated stainless steel duct and PVC-coated duct which will be exhausted using duplex high-plume dilution fans.

Extra care was taken to coordinate our installation since no anchor or core drilling was permitted, so as to minimize noise and vibration due to the atomic clock in the adjacent occupied building.
