Colorado State University’s Research Innovation Center (RIC) is actually a 79,500-square-foot set of three buildings: the RIC, the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Building and the Imaging Suite. It is the latest addition to CSU’s Infectious Disease Research Center.
The center provides a hub for university scientists and students to partner with businesses in the development of new products for treating and diagnosing infectious diseases. It includes a laboratory and office building for research, a biotechnology incubator, a medicinal chemistry core, a vivarium, a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, and space for an in-vivo imaging facility for BSL-3 research. U.S. Engineering installed steam piping, RO/DI systems, Phoenix valves for lab air supply and exhaust, a custom air handler and a custom heat recovery system.
The GMP Building is being validated to meet FDA requirements and has a goal of LEED® Gold Certification. It will be leased to private companies for manufacturing Phase 1 through Phase 4 pharmaceutical drugs for human or veterinary use. The building boasts a WFI (water for injection) loop with a 250-gallon tank and pump. There are WFI point-of-use valves in two of the Processing Suites and two Purification Suites, as well as in seven other preparation rooms. U.S. Engineering installed all of the orbital welded stainless steel piping for the WFI and pure steam systems, on which welds were 100 percent internally borescoped to confirm the integrity of the entire piping system.
